The land reclamation under fascism
The evolution of Casale del Giglio is deeply related to the land reclamation during the ’30s of last century – the countryside in the southern area of Rome was historically a swamp. After its reclamation, wine experimentation and production immediately started. That is where Latina county history starts from.
Casale del Giglio involved researchers of international standing, many of whom still contribute to Casale del Giglio’s research todayProf. Attilio Scienza from Milan University’s ‘Herbs Cultivation Institute’, Prof. Angelo Costacurtafrom the ‘Experimental Institute for the Vine cultivation’ (Conegliano, Treviso) and Prof. Fulvio Mattivi from theResearch & Innovation Centre at the ‘Edmund Mach Foundation’ – Rural VET Institute ‘San Michele all’Adige’ (Trento) – where Casale del Giglio’s winemaker, Paolo Tiefenthaler, was trained.
Sauvignon, Viognier, Petit Manseng, Bellone, Syrah, Petit Verdot are the main wines produced and commercialised by Casale del Giglio: a marvellous group of scents and flavours that is the result of the selection from a pool of 57 vines.
Experimentation is the inborn character of Casale del Giglio. Bellone is surely one of the most interesting yet amazing wines of Casale. Such a vine was almost extincted in the Fifties of last century, and it was then re-incubated to get new roots.
Anthium and Radix are amazing examples of such a continuos research.
