Since 1964,Cantina Sant’Andrea is one of the most interesting wineries in Latina county for its deep connection with the most recent twentieth century history events.Originally, Pandolfo family of Cantina Sant’Andrea had more than 600 hectares in Tunisia, but it was compelled to escape due to the anti-colonial process. So, it searched for a place to start anew – that place is the unique virgin territory of Latina plain recently recovered from the swamp during the reclamation action of the Thirties under fascism in Italy.
Awarded in 2019 in Cannes as best world rose wine producer, it has also Terracina Muscat as one of its best native grapes.
From Tunisia to Italy
Since 1850, Cantina Sant’Andrea history is deeply intertwined with the efforts of Pandolfo family which founded it then.. After fleeing from Tunisia during the French post-colonial turmoil,, Pandolfi family newly set up wineries, adjusting the work to Latina county, a very fertile plain with unique climate and never exploited by any of previous civilisations.
So, Pandolfo family had a double challenge – starting anew and getting familiar with a recently reclaimed swamp.
The chosen vineyard tenures were the ones around Circe mountain, a beautiful geographical combination of rocks, flourishing trees and sea. According to the Ulysses history of Homer, there Ulysses was held as a prisoner by the beautiful and terrible Circe, a witch which transformed the Ulysses and his Greek fellow heroes into swine.
A wine made of innovation
Cantina Sant’Andrea believes in the concept of integrated pest control methods and in circular economy. What does it mean? It means to think of a winery as a community service where each production passage can be a tool to circulate resources that can preserve and reinforce the local territory. Technological control, cultivation of complementary herbal species to maintain the balance of the chemistry and biology of land and the overall energy consumption in wine production – these are the key words of a winery which has made of labour and family its growth secret.
A vineyard between land and sea
The vineyards around Circe mountain are fascinating: it seems at once to live again the ancient Greek atmospheres. Just a few minutes away from the winery, you can reach the sea and breathe the freshness of Mediterranean Sea – such a unique climate condition gives to Sant’Andrea wine an exclusive and amazing taste.
