Experimenting solitude is not too bad if this exercise is brief and reflexive, and it is not the one of a lighthouse constantly measuring the time, perched on a high rocky outcrop, helping out unconditionally, aware that it will always be alone.
It seems the history of Faro della Guardia (literally it could be translated as the “Guard’s Lighthouse”), one of the best spots in the Mediterranean Sea. The lighthouse was built at the end of the Nineteenth century and it has been managed by three generations of technicians up to the Seventies of last century, to be after completely automatised – since then, the lighthouse destiny has slowly come apart with the one of the island. Indeed, exercising solitude requires one firmness and equilibrium.
One can learn to appreciate different things about solitude – the silence and the value of the words, its sound and the message attached to it. The words areone of the music instruments – they can emerge from the totality of the sounds, like in the The great gig in the sky by Pink Floyd, or completing the sound spectrum with delicate reverberations and soft delays, as in the track Tha by Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin. And this is what we are talking about.
Indeed, his words are like a lighthouse that shows the way and their sounds get the shape of one of the best albums ever in the genre of IDM – Intelligent Dance Music – in other words the masterpiece named Selected Ambient Work 85-92 by Aphex Twin.
After a long silent quarantine period, we should weight each personal sound, shaping and composing it, and the words should be chiselled as Alphex Twin has done, releasing his perfection only after a seven-year research, elaborating and moulding his experience acquired in the uncountable rave performances across half of Europe.
Indeed, summer is a play of extremes – the deafening voices on the beaches and the water alone lapping against the shore, the harsh heat and the mild breeze healing the flushed skin. This is exactly the route between the Bourbonic harbour and the biancolella vineyards surrounding the Moon’s Gravel shore (literally the translation of Chiaia di Luna beach) of the extraordinary Ponza island, where today music album brings us.
In this way, we are projected toward the summer by dreaming of and waiting for it with the responsible patience of the adults and the excitement of the children.
This is our summer plan: we approach Ponza island sustained by Ageispolis song and we cross to reach Capo Bianco (a beloved shore by Fellini) backed by Heliospan, a track with an aftertaste ofVangelis, clearly marked by a drum machine that repeats the sound pattern of the waves cut by the hull – this is the closing piece of the fantastic A-side of the vinyl.
It is high time to give word to everything surrounding us on the island because it explains more than thousands words, more than any description or gist we will ever make up.
After diving into the clearest water, with a glass of Faro della Guardia, tasting like Mediterranean atmospheres and time, and the tracks on, we now need to plan ahead and ship out wiser and more determined – it feels like floating around things and knowing the secrets of the wind!
